                                                          American Legion License Tags - How To

The Department of Maryland, in conjunction with the Motor Vehicle Administration, offers all paid up members in good standing the opportunity to obtain The American Legion organizational license tag for their vehicle. Any Department of Maryland American Legion member, who has a vehicle (cars, trucks or SUV's, not including trailers) registered in their name may qualify for the tag, (subject to MVA regulations). The procedure for obtaining a license tag is:

 1. Send Department Headquarters a letter along with a copy of the registration of the vehicle to be tagged, a copy of your membership card and $2.00 for processing. Either the owner or co/owner must be a member in good standing (current dues paid) with their post. If in doubt, contact your Post Adjutant for specific information and instructions. 

2. Upon receipt of the letter with a copy of the registration and membership card, plus $2.00 Department Headquarters will complete the application, assign a tag number, and return the application to the member. 

3. Once the member receives the application paperwork back from Department, fill it out and they can get their tags in one of three ways: 

The Motor Vehicle Administration one time fee charge of $25.00 must be accompanied with the application when taken or mailed to The Department of Motor Vehicles.

 METHOD 1 - Completed applications taken directly to the DMV in Glen Burnie (2nd Floor, Window 104, Organizational Tags) will receive their tags at that time. This is the quickest way. Once at the MVA it takes only a few minutes for the tags to be issued.

METHOD 2 - Completed applications taken to a MVA satellite office will have the tags mailed to them by the MVA.

 METHOD 3 - Completed applications mailed to the MVA will also have their tags mailed to them by the MVA

President’s Message from Marty, W9WMJ,

Dear TALARC members,

 

This is your monthly President’s Message from Marty, W9WMJ, with breaking
news about new post radio stations around the country, the coming Veteran’s
Day Special Event, and of course our monthly nets.

 

But our attention today is focused on the state of South Carolina and other
coastal states, and the severe and ongoing flooding following Hurricane
Joaquin.  This has been described as a “1,000-year Event” by meteorologists
in South Carolina and the result is more than 100 deaths, tens of thousands
of people without power, water, and sanitation, and a terrific drain on
existing public safety resources.  As we all know, Amateur Radio is already
there and will stay for the duration.

 

The American Legion national headquarters is already preparing grant
assistance through the National Emergency Fund (NEF). As many of you know,
the NEF is designed to provide emergency cash assistance to Legion members
who suffer loss from a natural disaster. During times of emergency, NEF
grants cover emergency food and shelter needs for Legion family members
until insurance kicks in and they can get back on their feet. You should add
NEF information and resources to your “go” kit in case of a natural disaster
in your town—information that can provide immediate relief to Legion members
you may come across. American Legion Posts that experience losses or unusual
expenses from a disaster, or while directly supporting local emergency
management agencies or public safety officials during such a disaster, may
also be eligible for grants.

TALARC is sending a targeted informational email to all South Carolina and
North Carolina TALARC members today with information from Assistant Director
of Internal Affairs David Elmore, the national NEF coordinator.  We hope
that in this way the resources of the American Legion can be placed in the
hands of the TALARC amateur radio operators on the front lines—not only for
themselves but for other Legionnaires they may come across with emergency
needs.

As we begin a new Legion year I would like to say thank you for allowing me to once again serve this great Organization as your 1st Vice and membership chairperson. In the 28 years that I have been a member the friendships, the support and the knowledge that I have gained is second to none. We are a family and as we go forward we will continue to be a family. We have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to turn the membership around and to continue to grow. You’re elected officers and the membership committee is here to help but we can’t do it for you. Each and every one of you has to want to work the membership, help do your part. The membership committee has been broken into two subcommittees, Retention and recruitment. There is a chairman for each subcommittee, Retention-Bill Lach and recruitment Bill Ganz, The membership incentives will be the same as in the past. Sign up three new members and receive the Commanders Challenge coin, 7 new members a Hat or T-shirt and 15 new members The Membership Polo Shirt. We have a long way to go to stop the slide in our membership and these incentives are a great start towards this but it will take all of us to do this, remember why you joined, the programs we do, the Veterans and their families that we help, these are the most important incentives we have. One tool available to Posts are the three Department membership pop-up tents. If Posts are doing fairs or membership drives in their communities the tents offer an eye catching design. Post 156 recently used the tent at the Howard County Fair and signed up 21 new members. While we can’t promise that return with every event, being out in the community is a great way to increase membership and participation. Not everyone will work towards these goals but want to do their part, if each and every one of us signs up one new member we will reach our goals and more. We are a family and a team lets work together on this and we will make it a great year.
